What is BX Format?

If you've been shopping for embroidery fonts, you've probably seen "BX" listed as one of the included file formats. But what exactly is BX, and why do so many embroiderers love it?

BX is a font format designed specifically for Embrilliance software. Unlike standard embroidery formats (PES, DST, JEF) where you stitch one letter at a time, BX fonts install directly into Embrilliance and let you type text just like a word processor — then resize, space, and arrange it however you like before sending it to your machine.

Why BX is a Game-Changer

Traditional embroidery fonts require you to stitch each letter separately and manually align them on your hoop. With BX format, you can:

  • Type full words and sentences directly in Embrilliance software
  • Resize freely without distorting the stitch quality
  • Adjust letter spacing (kerning) with a simple slider

How to Install a BX Font

  1. Download your BX font file (it will end in .bx)
  2. Open Embrilliance software on your computer
  3. Go to File → Install BX Font
  4. Select your downloaded .bx file
  5. The font will now appear in your font list — ready to use!

It takes less than a minute, and you only need to install it once.

Do I Need Embrilliance to Use BX Fonts?

Yes — BX format is exclusive to Embrilliance software. However, most BX font packs (including all fonts at Embroidery Sky) also include PES, DST, and other formats, so you can still use the font on your machine even without Embrilliance.

Is Embrilliance Free?

Embrilliance offers a free version called Embrilliance Essentials that supports BX fonts. You can download it from the Embrilliance website and start using BX fonts right away at no cost.
