Small Lettering Embroidery Digitizing: Tips for Clean, Readable Text Every Time
Small lettering is one of the most common — and most frustrating — challenges in embroidery. Whether it’s a tagline under a logo, a name on a uniform, or fine print on a monogram, small text embroidery digitizing requires a completely different approach than standard lettering.
Minimum Size for Embroidered Text
- Satin stitch: Minimum 4mm cap height
- Running stitch: Can go as small as 2–3mm but looks thinner
- Fill stitch: Not recommended under 8mm — causes puckering
Best Fonts for Small Embroidery Lettering
Choose fonts with:
- Simple, open letterforms — no decorative serifs at small sizes
- Consistent stroke width — avoid thick/thin contrast fonts
- Open counters — enclosed spaces in ‘e’, ‘a’, ‘o’ fill in at small sizes
Best: Block sans-serif, purpose-built embroidery fonts
Avoid: Script, italic, decorative, and condensed fonts
Key Digitizing Settings
1. Use Satin Stitch
For text under 10mm cap height, satin stitch is almost always the right choice. Smooth columns read clearly at small sizes.
2. Reduce Stitch Density
Small areas need lower density — reduce by 10–20% to prevent puckering and distortion.
3. Increase Pull Compensation
Thread pull makes letters appear thinner. Increase pull compensation slightly to maintain letter width.
4. Minimal Underlay
Use a single running stitch underlay or none at all on stable woven fabrics. Heavy underlay distorts small text.
5. Add Extra Letter Spacing
Add 10–15% extra spacing to keep characters distinct and prevent merging.
Fabric Tips
- Woven fabrics: Most forgiving — stable and doesn’t stretch
- Knit fabrics: Use firm stabilizer and reduce density further
- Terry cloth/towels: Use water-soluble topping to keep stitches on surface
- Caps: Keep text as large as possible due to curved surface
Always Test First
- Stitch out on the same fabric before production
- Check readability from arm’s length
- Photograph and zoom in to check letter clarity
- Adjust density, pull compensation, or size as needed
